The sixty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 to 24 March 2017 under the priority theme:  "Women's economic empowerment in the changing world of work".

The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), 2002, adopted by the Second World Assembly on Ageing, held in Madrid from 8 to 12 April 2002, requested a systematic review of its implementation as being essential for the Plan’s success in improving the quality of life of older persons.

The review and appraisal of the Madrid Plan of Action takes place every five years.  Member States decided to utilize a unique process of review which involves a participatory “bottom-up” element involving civil society and older persons themselves.
