UNDESA's Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) organized an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the priority theme of the 56th session of the Commission for Social Development: “Strategies for Eradicating Poverty to Achieve Sustainable Development for All”. The theme of the 2017 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) to be observed at the United Nations Headquarters is “Understand and End Financial Abuse of Older People: A Human Rights Issue.”
The theme of International Day of Older Persons 2017 is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”
This year’s day is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences.
