Indigenous Peoples at the 72nd Session of the UNGA

Indigenous Peoples at the 72nd Session of the UNGAThe 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 72) convened at the UN Headquarters in New York from 12 to 25 September 2017 and focused on the following theme, ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’. A number of events also took place parallel to the UNGA 72, some of which had the participation of Indigenous Peoples. Below is a list of Indigenous related events.

High-level event to mark the 10th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples, titled “Making the Sustainable Development Goals Work for Indigenous Peoples: Launching the Indigenous Navigator” hosted by Estonia in cooperation with the European Commission, the International Labour Organization and the Indigenous Peoples Major Group for SDGs.

SDG Media Zone Panel titled “The 2030 Agenda – an opportunity or threat for Indigenous Peoples’ rights?” which had the participation of Joan Carling, Co-convenor of the Indigenous Peoples’ Major Group on SDGs (Philippines); Myrna Cunningham, President of the Fund for Development of Indigenous Peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean and expert of the SDG Technology Facilitation Mechanism (Nicaragua) and Stanley Kimaren, Executive Director of the Indigenous Livelihoods Enhancement Partners (Kenya), moderated by Chandra Roy-Henriksen, Chief of the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Division for Social Policy and Development.
