Le 26 février 2024, l'Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a adopté la Résolution 78/261, établissant officiellement le "Sommet Social Mondial" sous le titre "Deuxième Sommet Mondial pour le Développement Social". À la demande de l'Assemblée générale, S.E. M. Philippe Kridelka, Représentant permanent de la Belgique auprès des Nations Unies, et S.E. M. Omar Hilale, Représentant permanent du Royaume du Maroc auprès des Nations Unies, ont été désignés comme co-facilitateurs du processus préparatoire intergouvernemental en vue du Sommet, incluant ses modalités et son résultat. Le Sommet Social Mondial 2025, officiellement intitulé Deuxième Sommet Mondial pour le Développement Social (WSSD2), est un événement mondial majeur visant à favoriser un développement social inclusif et à relever les défis clés pour assurer le bien-être de tous. Il sert de plateforme aux gouvernements, aux organisations de la société civile, aux acteurs du secteur privé et aux autres parties prenantes pour collaborer à l'élaboration de politiques et de stratégies promouvant l'inclusivité, l'équité et la durabilité.
