The 60th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD60) will be convened with the priority theme of “Inclusive and resilient recovery from COVID-19 for sustainable livelihoods, wellbeing and dignity for all: eradicating poverty and hunger in all its forms and dimensions to achieve the 2030 Agenda”.

The deliberation and outcome of the Commission (policy guidance and recommendations) will be an important input to the HLPF in July 2022. The theme of the 2022 HLPF is “Building back better from COVID-19 while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. SDGs 4 (education), 5 (gender), 14 (oceans), 15 (terrestrial ecosystems) and 17 (partnerships), including their interlinkages, will also be reviewed by the HLPF.

With less than ten years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the COVID19 crisis has led to the resurgence of extreme poverty for the first time since 1998, and further increased the number of chronically undernourished people, reinforcing pre-existing inequalities, and exacerbating multiple forms of deprivation. It has also affected food systems and drastically curtailed economic activity, resulting in devastating effects on rural and urban livelihoods and well-being of millions of people across regions. The crisis is expected to push the global community even further from achieving the goal of ending poverty and hunger by 2030.

At the same time, the COVID-19 demonstrated the critical role of social policy to protect people, especially the most vulnerable, and underscored the need for integrated long-term policy frameworks to recover better from the crisis and to accelerate progress in the implementation of the SDGs. The Commission for Social Development, within its mandates, will contribute to ECOSOC and HLPF, by assisting Member States to simultaneously reduce poverty, hunger, and inequalities, enhance people’s capabilities and resilience, and ensure sustainable livelihoods for all.

The Bureau of the Commission for Social Development will convene its inter-sessional informal preparatory meeting to prepare Member States and other stakeholders for the upcoming 60th session (7 – 16 February 2022). The Commission session is expected to adopt a resolution on the priority theme, with action-oriented policy recommendations to enable an inclusive and resilient recovery from COVID-19 to implement the 2030 Agenda.

The informal preparatory meeting will be held virtually on Thursday, 9 December from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
