Fourth Review and Appraisal of Implementation of Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing

The Report of the Secretary-General to the 58th session of the Commission for Social Development in 2020  provides an overview of the modalities for the fourth review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing. Such a review and appraisal presents a unique opportunity, as the Second World Assembly on Ageing approaches its 20-year milestone, to generate renewed momentum for international action to advance the ageing agenda.

What’s in the Report?

• An overview of the first, second and third review and appraisal processes of the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action conducted by the Commission for Social Development;
• An update on relevant regional and international activities on ageing within the United Nations system, in the run-up to the fourth review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action;
• Underlining the important work of the United Nations regional commissions in assisting governments in the implementation and follow-up of the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing, and in consultation with focal points on ageing in the regional commissions, the report presents opportunities to advance the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action and
• The proposed calendar for the fourth review and appraisal of the implementation of the Madrid Plan of Action, as well as key recommendations for consideration by the Commission.
